Three jobs in one dog. That is what a utility gundog is, and it is the only
reason we breed. Everything else our dogs do — the show ring, obedience,
living on your lounge — comes second to being fit for that work.

The category
A utility gundog is not a breed. It is a job description.
Dogs Australia divides field trialling into three streams — pointer and setter,
spaniel and retriever, and utility gundog. The utility stream exists for the breeds
expected to do all of it: hunt, point, and retrieve fur and feather, on land and
from water.
Eight breeds sit in that category in Australia. We breed two of them.

The standard we breed to
Measured against a written standard, not a photograph.
Both of our breeds are described by an FCI standard adopted by Dogs Australia.
These are the numbers a judge is working to. We publish them so you can hold us to them.
German Shorthaired Pointer
FCI Standard 119 · 5 Jan 1995 · Adopted in Australia May 1996
- Group
- Group 3 (Gundogs)
- Height
- Dogs 62–66 cm at the withers; bitches 58–63 cm. Deviation of more than 2 cm is a serious fault.
- Proportion
- Body length slightly exceeds height at the withers.
- Temperament
- Firm, balanced, reliable, restrained. Neither nervous, shy nor aggressive.
- Colour
- Solid brown; brown with white markings; dark or light brown roan; white with brown markings — and the same range in black.
- Disqualifying
- Weak character. Rear dewclaws. Overshot or undershot bite. Missing teeth beyond the stated allowance.
Brittany
FCI Standard 95 · 28 Apr 1995 · Effective in Australia 1 Jan 1996
- Group
- Group 3 (Gundogs). Smallest of the pointing breeds.
- Height
- Males ideal 49–50 cm (limits 48–51 cm); females ideal 48–49 cm (limits 47–50 cm). Outside the limits is a disqualification.
- Proportion
- Fits in a square — point of shoulder to point of buttock equals height at the withers. Skull to muzzle 3:2.
- Temperament
- Adapts to any environment, sociable, mentally balanced.
- Colour
- White and orange, white and black, white and liver; piebald or roan; tricolour with tan. A self colour is not allowed.
- Disqualifying
- Any dewclaw, even rudimentary. Aggression or excessive shyness. Height outside the limits.
On tails. Both standards were written around docked tails. Docking a dog’s tail
has been an offence in NSW since 1 June 2004 under the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979, unless a vet does it in the interests
of that dog’s welfare. Our dogs carry their natural tails, as the GSP standard provides for.

How we breed
Four commitments, and what each one actually means.

One litter every other year
We are a small family kennel with dedicated breeding and training facilities.
There is a waiting list, and it is not first-come. We match puppies to homes. -
Screened before mated
Every dog is DNA tested and hip and elbow screened. The results are published
on that dog’s page, not summarised in a sentence like this one. -
Registered, inspected, trained
Registered breeders with Dogs NSW under the prefix Edeljager. Our kennels are
independently inspected and we have completed breeder training. Every puppy is
registered with Dogs Australia (ANKC Ltd). -
The dog comes back to us
Lifetime support for every puppy. If you can no longer care for a dog we bred,
we take it back. No time limit and no conditions.
Before you enquire
The truth about these breeds.
A utility gundog is loving, loyal and relentless. Bored, they will dismantle
whatever is in view — on either side of the fence. Read both columns honestly.
This is your breed if
- You can give the dog 20–30 minutes of flat-out running every day, not just a walk.
- Your yard is securely and highly fenced, with a walk-in kennel or crate.
- You want the dog in the house, on the lounge, and probably on your bed.
- You intend to train, not just to own. Obedience, retrieving, field, agility — pick one.
- There is someone, or another dog, at home most of the day.
Please look elsewhere if
- The dog will be alone all day with nothing to do.
- You chose a short coat because you think it means less shedding. It does not.
- You keep chooks, rabbits or other small animals. The prey drive is real and it is not fair on them.
- You want a guard dog.
- You are not going to train it. These dogs are too clever and too strong to leave untrained.
Ask us first. The GSP community online is large and generous, and also full of
confident advice that does not hold up. Before you wade through it, call us.
